Quarter Sessions

edit

By John Simpson •

Courts held by Justices of the Peace in counties and boroughs of England and Wales, traditionally four times a year. They exercised judicial and administrative functions, including trying criminal offences, licensing, and managing county finances. They remained an important part of the English and Welsh legal system into the twentieth century, alongside magistrates’ courts and assizes. The Courts Act 1971 abolished Quarter Sessions, transferring their judicial functions principally to the Crown Court.
