Queen’s Counsel

edit

By John Simpson •

A barrister appointed by the Crown during the reign of a queen as one of its ‘Counsel learned in the law’, recognising professional distinction. Established in England in the seventeenth century, the rank conferred precedence over junior barristers; holders wear silk gowns and are called ‘silks’. The title changes to become King’s Counsel under a king, as in 2022.
