Raja

edit

By John Simpson •

A title of rank or rulership in South Asia, derived from Sanskrit rāja, meaning king or ruler. Under British rule in India, raja was used for rulers of some princely states and also as an honorific title granted or recognised by the British government. It did not necessarily imply sovereignty: princely rulers exercised varying degrees of internal authority while acknowledging British paramountcy. The feminine form is rani; rajah is an older English spelling.
