reader

Generally: a person who reads. In the Inns of Court, traditionally a senior barrister appointed to deliver a reading, or formal exposition of law. By the nineteenth century Readership was largely an honorary distinction. In universities, Reader is an academic rank, generally above lecturer and below professor, although its status varies between institutions.
