revising barrister

edit

By John Simpson •

A barrister appointed to revise the electoral register and hear objections to entries, particularly under nineteenth-century parliamentary registration law. Revising barristers presided over courts held in each constituency for this purpose and determined whether names should be added or removed from the register. The office was created by the Registration Act 1843 and abolished by the Representation of the People Act 1918.
