ritual

By John Simpson •

A prescribed form or sequence of actions used in religious worship or other ceremonial observance. In nineteenth-century Anglican controversy, the term particularly referred to ceremonial practices introduced or revived by Anglo-Catholics, including vestments, incense, candles, processions, and Eucharistic observances. Their use became a major ecclesiastical and political issue, with opponents regarding some practices as unlawful or excessively Roman Catholic.
