Ritualistic

edit

By John Simpson •

Characterised by, or relating to, ritual or ceremonial practices. In nineteenth-century Anglicanism, the term particularly described forms of worship associated with Ritualism and the Catholic tradition, including the use of vestments, incense, candles, elaborate ceremonial, and distinctive Eucharistic practices. It was often used critically by Protestant opponents, who regarded such practices as inappropriate innovations or evidence of Roman Catholic influence.
