royal levee

A formal court occasion at which men were presented to the Sovereign, traditionally in the afternoon, and had the opportunity to pay their respects. Royal levees were an important feature of British court life, particularly in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Presentation at a levee could be an important social and ceremonial occasion for gentlemen seeking recognition at Court. The practice declined during the twentieth century and was discontinued in 1939.
