Royal Society of Literature

A learned society founded in 1820 under the patronage of the Prince Regent to promote literature and literary achievement. It received a Royal Charter in 1825. Its nineteenth-century Fellowship included poets, historians, scholars, and other men of letters, reflecting an early emphasis on scholarship and classical learning as well as literature. The RSL remains a charity supporting writers and readers.
