sepoy
editA soldier, usually an Indian serving in the army of the East India Company or, later, the British Indian Army. The term derives from Persian sipāhī, meaning soldier. Sepoys formed the bulk of the Company’s Indian forces and played a central role in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, when large numbers rebelled against British authority. The term continued in use for Indian soldiers after the Crown assumed direct rule in 1858.
