Sevastopol

A major port and naval base on the Black Sea coast of Crimea, founded by Russia in 1783 after the annexation of the Crimean Khanate. It became the principal base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and the chief objective of Allied forces during the Crimean War, when it was besieged for almost a year and captured in September 1855. Sevastopol remains an important naval base. It is internationally recognised as part of Ukraine, but has been under Russian occupation since 2014.
