A university student receiving financial assistance, historically in return for domestic or menial duties. At Cambridge and Trinity College Dublin, sizars were generally students of limited means who received reduced fees or allowances. Their duties gradually disappeared, leaving the status chiefly associated with financial support. The roughly corresponding categories at Oxford were servitors and battelers, although their privileges and obligations differed.
