Society of Dilettanti

A private London society founded in the 1730s by gentlemen who had travelled in Italy on the Grand Tour. Candidates were initially required to have been known personally to members in Italy. Famously characterised by Horace Walpole as really requiring that members had been drunk, the Society later became an important patron of classical art and archaeology, financing expeditions and publications. It continues today.
