Society of Painter-Etchers

A society founded in 1880 as the Society of Painter-Etchers by Sir Francis Seymour Haden and five other artists to promote etching and engraving as original creative arts rather than reproductive crafts. It received the Royal title in 1888, and “Engravers” was added in 1898. A Charter of Incorporation followed in 1911. The Society admitted artists working in woodcut and wood-engraving from 1920, and in 1991 became the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. Its Fellows use the post-nominal RE.
