A lawyer qualified to advise clients, conduct legal business, and represent them in certain courts. In nineteenth-century England and Wales, solicitors generally qualified through articles of clerkship. Historically distinct from barristers, whom they commonly instructed for specialist advocacy, solicitors have since acquired wider rights of audience. The profession is regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority in England and Wales.
