special pleader

A nineteenth-century legal practitioner specialising in drafting pleadings for court cases rather than appearing in court. Special pleaders were not necessarily barristers and could be licensed to practise under the Bar. It was once common for aspiring barristers to gain experience as special pleaders before being called to the Bar. The specialisation declined during the nineteenth century and had largely disappeared by the beginning of the twentieth century.
