Speculative Society

A student debating society founded at the University of Edinburgh in 1764 to improve literary composition and public speaking. Members, elected by ballot, were required to participate in essays and debates on subjects including politics, law, history, and literature. Associated with the Scottish Enlightenment, it became a training ground for prominent lawyers, politicians, and writers. The Society continues today.
