Stipendiary curate

A clergyman paid a stipend to assist a parish incumbent with pastoral and liturgical duties, without holding the benefice. Stipendiary curates became increasingly important in the nineteenth century as urban populations and parishes expanded. In the Church of England today, the term generally denotes a paid assistant priest, often serving a training curacy following ordination.
