Student of Civil Law

edit

By John Simpson •

At nineteenth-century Oxford, a university student pursuing the Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL), an advanced degree in Roman and civil law, normally after an undergraduate degree. It is chiefly a historical term; modern Oxford students are normally described as studying for the BCL rather than as “students of civil law”.
