Summer Exhibition

An annual exhibition of contemporary art organised by the Royal Academy of Arts and first held in 1769. It provides artists with an opportunity to exhibit and sell their work, and became an important event in the British artistic calendar, attracting large audiences and providing a major showcase for British painting and sculpture. It continues annually at Burlington House, London, and remains open to works submitted by non-Academicians as well as Academicians.
