Surat

A major port and commercial city in Gujarat, western India. Under the Mughal Empire, Surat was an important centre of international trade, particularly in textiles. The East India Company established a factory there in 1613, making it an early base of English trade in India. Its importance declined with the rise of Bombay, but Surat later developed into a major textile and diamond-processing centre.
