Sylvester Medal

A medal awarded by the Royal Society for distinguished research in the mathematical sciences. Established in 1901 in memory of the mathematician James Joseph Sylvester, it was first awarded in 1901 to Henri Poincaré. It has subsequently been awarded to many leading mathematicians, including G. H. Hardy, Bertrand Russell, G. I. Taylor, Mary Cartwright, and Andrew Wiles. The medal continues to be awarded, normally biennially, for outstanding contributions to mathematics.
