At Worcester College, Oxford, a scholar or Fellow of the College who wore a tabard, or sleeveless academic gown, as the distinctive dress of the foundation. The term derives from tabard, a medieval garment. At Worcester, Taberdars were members of the College’s foundation and traditionally held scholarships or fellowships carrying particular privileges. The title was especially associated with the College’s Fellows, and survives as a historical designation within Worcester’s institutional terminology.
