By John Simpson •

An Oxford University institution devoted to modern European languages and literatures, established through a bequest from the architect Sir Robert Taylor, who died in 1788. Its building on St Giles’, Oxford, opened in 1849 houses the Taylor Institution Library, an important research collection. The institution continues to support teaching, research, and scholarship in modern languages.
