temperance

By John Simpson •

The practice or advocacy of moderation, or abstinence, in the consumption of alcohol. The temperance movement became prominent in Britain during the nineteenth century, campaigning against drunkenness and for restrictions on the sale of alcohol. It influenced licensing legislation and was supported by many churches, including the Church of England Temperance Society, founded in 1883. Church opinion generally favoured temperance but did not necessarily require total abstinence.
