At Oxford University, a man, often a clergyman, eligible under special regulations to obtain a degree after ten years’ standing from matriculation, without following the normal undergraduate course or examinations. The arrangement particularly benefited men already pursuing clerical or other careers who could not attend Oxford conventionally.
