Test Act

edit

By John Simpson •

A law imposing religious qualifications for public office or education. At Oxford and Cambridge, religious tests restricted admission, degrees, and academic appointments, excluding many Catholics and Dissenters. Reforms in 1854 and 1856 opened degrees more widely, while the Universities Tests Act 1871 removed most remaining religious restrictions on lay degrees and university and college offices.
