Tomline Prize

A mathematics prize at Eton College, established through the benefaction of George Tomline and first awarded in 1837. It was open to the whole school and was awarded to the boy who performed best in the Tomline mathematical examination; the winner was known as the Tomline Prizeman and originally received books to the value of £30. The prize became Eton’s principal award for mathematics and has continued, with some interruptions, into the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
