Tomline Prizeman

At Eton College, the title given to the winner of the Tomline Prize, the School’s principal mathematics prize. The prize, founded through the benefaction of George Tomline and first awarded in 1837, was open to the whole school and recognised exceptional mathematical achievement. A Tomline Prizeman originally received books to the value of £30, and many winners went on to distinguished careers in mathematics, science, and public life. The title remained in use throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
