trade union
editAn organisation of workers formed to protect and advance their employment interests, particularly through collective bargaining over wages and conditions. Trade unions developed rapidly in Britain during the nineteenth century as restrictions on workers’ combinations were removed. They became legally recognised and influential in the twentieth century and remain an important part of British industrial relations.
