tripos

At Cambridge, a course of study and the associated final examinations in a particular subject or group of subjects, leading to an honours degree. The term originally referred to an examination and developed from Cambridge’s earlier system of academic disputations. The Tripos system developed into separate subject examinations, including the Mathematical Tripos and Classical Tripos, whose results were classed by degree of attainment.
