Unionists

edit

By John Simpson •

People who support maintaining a political union. In British and Irish history, the term became particularly associated from the late nineteenth century with opponents of Irish Home Rule and supporters of the Union between Great Britain and Ireland. Irish Unionists were concentrated particularly among Protestants in Ulster, though Unionism was neither exclusively Protestant nor confined to Ulster. More generally, Unionists can refer to supporters of any political union, and the term remains current.
