University Extension
editThe provision of university teaching to people unable to attend a university conventionally, through lectures, classes, and other courses. The University Extension movement developed in Britain from the 1870s, particularly through Oxford and Cambridge, and widened access to higher education. The term remains in use, notably for university programmes of continuing and adult education, although their organisation and methods have changed considerably.
