Vice-Chancellor’s Court

edit

By John Simpson •

A court presided over by a Vice-Chancellor, with functions varying by institution. At Oxford and Cambridge, such courts historically exercised civil and disciplinary jurisdiction over university members and other privileged persons. The term also applied to courts of equity presided over by the Vice-Chancellors appointed to assist the Lord Chancellor in nineteenth-century England, and to comparable courts elsewhere in the British Empire.
