Volunteer movement

A nineteenth-century movement that created locally organised volunteer military units which undertook military training and could be called out for the defence of Britain against the perceived threat of invasion. It expanded rapidly after the establishment of the Volunteer Force in 1859, when thousands of men formed rifle and artillery corps, largely financed and equipped locally. In 1908 the Volunteer Force was incorporated into the new Territorial Force.
