Whigs
editMembers or supporters of a British political tradition favouring parliamentary authority, religious toleration, and constitutional reform. In the nineteenth century, they formed a principal parliamentary grouping alongside the Tories. During the 1850s, Whigs increasingly allied with Radicals and Peelites, helping establish the Liberal Party in 1859. The term survived as a description of the older political tradition.
