White’s Club

edit

By John Simpson •

A London gentlemen’s club, originating in 1693 as a chocolate house and developing into a private club in the eighteenth century. It became one of the most exclusive London clubs and was particularly associated with the aristocracy and the Tory and Conservative political establishment. It was never formally a party-political club and by the 1830s its explicitly political character had weakened. White’s remains a private club in St James’s Street.
