By John Simpson •

The formal name of the Goldsmiths’ Company, one of the City of London’s ancient livery companies. Formally recognised by the Crown in 1180, it received its first royal charter in 1327. Historically responsible for regulating goldsmiths and testing precious metals, it continues hallmarking through the London Assay Office and supports charitable and educational causes. Membership is not restricted to practising goldsmiths.
