Wrangler

At Cambridge University, a student achieving first-class honours in the Mathematical Tripos. Wranglers were formerly ranked by examination marks, the highest being Senior Wrangler. The distinction carried considerable prestige in the nineteenth century. In 1890 Philippa Fawcett scored above the Senior Wrangler but was ineligible for the title. Individual rankings ceased in 1909; women gained full degrees in 1948.
