Zimmermann telegram
editA secret German telegram sent in January 1917 proposing an alliance with Mexico if the United States entered the First World War. Germany offered support for Mexico to recover Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Intercepted and deciphered by British intelligence, its publication in March inflamed American opinion against Germany and contributed to the United States entering the war in April 1917.
